Men’s Race Coach
NYO Member since 2003. Paddling since 2003.

Looking for something different to do, Ed Acker joined NYO in 2003 as a novice paddler. As a water lover and someone who grew up going to the beaches in New York and New Jersey, he quickly realized that outrigger paddling was for him.

His first race was the Washington Monumental in DC followed two months later with the Kent Island Cup. In 2004 he was part of the NYO men’s team that did the Catalina Crossing finishing 6th in their division.

Since then, Ed has done a slew of races including the Moloka’i Hoe, Liberty Challenge, Blackburn Challenge and the Mayor’s Cup . He has competed in Costa Rica, Brazil and the World Sprints in Canada. He enjoys paddling in any seat but has been steering of late.

Ed volunteered to start coaching the men in 2011. He enjoys the camaraderie and wants to see NYO men become more competitive. Ed resides in Montclair, NJ (although he really wants to live on the UWS) with his girlfriend Christina and their dog Cody.
